Resources for Caregivers

Mental health disorders don’t just impact the person with the disorder. Family members and friends often face crippling challenges in knowing what to do to help their family member. Those without a substance use disorder or mental health disorder struggle to understand why treatment is so challenging or why someone can’t simply stop. Yet these are also among the most valuable resources a person with a disability has.
Mental Health Hope provides strategies and tools to help you, as a caregiver, help your loved one through the challenges they are facing. When you reach out to us now, we will connect you with the resources available to provide your family member or friend with solutions.
What Should Caregivers Know Now
Before you can provide care and support to someone with a mental health disorder, it’s critical that you understand what is happening and why this is one of the most challenging times of their life.
Mental health disorders are debilitating. They are much like a physical disease. A physical disease changes the way the cells of your body work. In a mental health disorder, the changes to the brain and mind are very real. The symptoms you see, such as the symptoms of anxiety or depression, are a clue that something isn’t okay. That’s when getting your loved one help is so important.
Keep the following in mind:
- If your loved one is facing a mental health crisis right now, or you are worried they will harm themselves or another person, call 988 immediately.
- Mental health disorders benefit from professional therapy and counseling. Like any other disease, a licensed provider is an essential component of the treatment and healing process.
- They cannot just fix it or stop their symptoms. Most people with a mental health disorder certainly want to do so. But they cannot just “stop.”
You can be a powerful advocate for them. To do that, you need to consider critical factors that play a role in their needs.
The Resources Caregivers Need
We encourage you to take the first step in helping your loved one by contacting Mental Health Hope. We work with family members, friends, and other caregivers to provide guidance in navigating care options. When you contact us, we will:
- Provide you with guidance on whether we can help your loved one through our programs and treatment methods.
- Offer guidance on what to do right now to encourage your loved one to get care.
- Offer insight into your rights, as a family member, to get your loved one into care.
You cannot do this for them. They need, beyond anything else, support and guidance, as well as a professional therapist to guide them.
National Alliance on Mental Illness
At the National Alliance on Mental Illness, you’ll find numerous tools, strategies, and educational resources available to help you, as a caregiver, protect your loved one and get them into treatment.
You can also join the NAMI Family Support Group. This is a peer-led group that is meant just for family members, caregivers, and other people who provide support to those with mental health disorders or substance use disorders. Use the services here to educate yourself about what your family member is going through with their mental health disorder.
Your Health Insurance Provider
Most health insurance providers offer coverage for mental health disorder treatment. That includes depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. We can help you learn what type of coverage is available for your loved one when you reach out to us. A free insurance verification allows you to know specifically when your options are.
If you do not have insurance or your loved one’s insurance does not cover the type of care they need, Mental Health Hope will offer guidance to you on alternative funding options. Do not give up on your loved one just yet. We do encourage you to contact our team. We would be happy to help verify insurance to offer clarity on what coverage options you have.
